A Little About Us
The Jalayah Hackman Foundation (JHF) was established in 2017 in honor of Jalayah Me'Sha Hackman, a brilliant and vibrant young woman who studied Criminal Justice at the University of North Alabama. Jalayah’s passion for learning and her desire to make a difference left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.
Tragically, Jalayah’s life was cut short in July 2017. To honor her memory and continue her dreams, JHF was created with the mission of empowering youth through education, mentorship, and leadership opportunities. The foundation reflects Jalayah’s spirit by helping students expand their horizons, achieve academic success, and pursue their future with confidence and purpose.
Since its founding in 2017, the Jalayah Hackman Foundation has been a driving force in transforming lives through education, mentorship, and community support. We have proudly celebrated the graduation of more than 50 students, awarded over $20,000 in scholarships, and invested $50,000 in utility and rent assistance to help families stay stable during difficult times. Our tutoring programs have supported more than 150 students from kindergarten through 12th grade, while our career development initiatives have helped over 25 young people secure jobs, build resumes, and prepare for brighter futures. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we became one of the largest local providers of academic support, creating safe learning spaces and connecting students with tutors to ensure they stayed on track and continued passing their classes despite the challenges of remote learning. Beyond the numbers, our work is about instilling confidence, creating lasting relationships, and being our students’ biggest supporters. With every tutoring session, scholarship, and act of support, we remain committed to empowering the next generation to dream bigger and achieve more.

We are equally grateful for the ongoing support of local businesses and the generous donations from our community, which help us expand our tutoring, mentoring, scholarships, and family assistance initiatives. Together with these incredible partners—and many more—we are creating opportunities, opening doors, and building brighter futures for students and families across the region.
